We are happy to invite you to a cultural lecture by the musician Gordiy Starukh a master of lira (hurdy-gurdy).

In his lecture, Gordiy Starukh will tell us how the lira came to Ukraine. What is her connection to the secret brotherhoods whose existence became known only at the end of the 19th century? Why normal people weren’t allowed to play the Drehleier and why women weren’t even allowed to touch it?

What was the secret around this instrument and why people risked their life if they unveiled it? What are the main differences between the Ukrainian lira and modern instruments?

We will also listen to archival recordings of lyre players and learn about the world history and context of the instrument (which is about 1000 years of adventures). Finally, a specific section will be focused on the lira in pop and geek culture - which movies, games, and cult recordings has it appeared in, and what provoked the world Drehleier community to attack the headquarter of Netflix with hundreds of eggs?
